OUR HISTORY
The Sharks are an Ice Hockey Club based in Melbourne, Victoria.
We began playing in 1995, with two teams, one playing in Senior B, and one in Senior C. The following year we added juniors to our programme and continued to play at the senior levels. In 1997, led by the clubs steering committee, we applied to the VIHA (now IHV) for full club status. Our application was approved and we became an incorporated member of VIHA.
In 1997 we fielded teams in the Senior B and Senior C competitions as well as Junior A, Junior B and Junior C. Rules at the time stipulated that a new club had to win a B grade title before a Senior A team could be fielded. It did not take the Sharks Ice Hockey Club long to accomplish this feat- winning the Senior B title in our first year of incorporation.
We started playing out of the rink in Ringwood until it closed down in 2003, the club then went on to play out of the rink Bayswater for 12 months until it closed in 2004. When the Docklands rink opened in 2010, it gave Victoria a second rink along with Oakleigh. In 2018 a new rink in Reservoir opened and in the summer season of 2018-2019 the Sharks IHC began to play games there.
IHV changed the format for the competition in 2008 to be Premier A, Premier Reserve and Premier C. In 2010 IHV introduced the Rec C competition. Before the 2017 winter season IHV again changed the format of the winter competition by removing checking from Premier reserve and renaming the now three non-checking divisions Senior B, Senior C and Senior D.
The Sharks IHC are represented in all levels of Winter competition, having teams in Premier A, Senior B, Senior C and Senior D. In addition, the club in 2018-2019 was represented by seven teams across the five summer divisions.
Our first Senior A premiership was in 2004. Then the Sharks and Saints merged Tigers team won the premiership in the Premier A division in 2010 and 2013, Premier Reserve won the premierships in 2008, 2009 and 2011. In 2014 we regained our own Premier A team, and in 2018 won the premiership for the second time as the Sharks.
Most recently, our Division 3 team won the Summer 2021/2022 Premiership.
